Unacceptable Risk

As the eyes of the world have focused on the nuclear crisis in Fukushima, Japan, Americans have begun to raise questions about the safety of nuclear power plants in the United States. American nuclear power plants are not immune to the types of natural disasters, mechanical failures, human errors, and losses of critical electric power supplies that have characterized major nuclear accidents such as the one at Fukushima Daiichi power plant in Japan. Indeed, at several points over the last 20 years, American nuclear power plants have experienced “close calls” that could have led to damage to the reactor core and the subsequent release of large amounts of radiation.

A new report released today by the Arizona PIRG Education Fund documents a history of safety problems at nuclear reactors in the United States. Salt River Project (SRP) Board Votes in Favor of Expanding Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Programs

Last fall, Salt River Project (SRP) agreed to postpone its proposed rate hike due to significant concerns about the size of the increase and SRP’s limited investments in energy efficiency and clean renewable energy.  Since that time, groups including the Arizona PIRG Education Fund asked ratepayers to send SRP the message that it should focus more on increased energy efficiency.  Today the SRP voted to approve the increase in energy efficiency and renewable energy investments.

Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC) Approves Moving Forward with a Gas Utility Energy Efficiency Standard

Today, the Arizona Corporation Commission acted to save consumers and businesses money by approving a Gas Energy Efficiency Rule and Standard.
