Protecting Our Water Supply
During the 2006 election, Arizona PIRG succeeded in getting legislative candidates from across the state to support efforts to ensure our water is conserved, used efficiently, restored whenever it is taken out of our water supply, and that all Arizonans have a 100-year local, clean water supply.
Saving Money By Saving Energy
Gov. Napolitano signed Arizona PIRG priority legislation that sets minimum energy efficiency standards on 12 appliances. This legislation is estimated to save consumers and businesses in Arizona over $680 million on their energy bills and reduce water consumption by over 15 billion gallons.
Registering Young Voters
Because civic habits are formed at a young age, Arizona PIRG and our allies registered and mobilized thousands of 18- to 24-year olds during the 2004 and 2006 elections. Due in part to the efforts of our coalition, the 2004 turnout among 18- to 24-year-olds increased 17 percentage points over the 2000 elections, while the overall electorate showed only a 4 percentage point increase. The Coalition registered thousands of Arizona students and worked to turn out over 10,000 students to the polls in 2006.
Cleaner Cars for Arizona
Following a unanimous recommendation from her Climate Change Advisory Group to bring cleaner cars to Arizona, Gov. Napolitano issued an Executive Order for Arizona to adopt and implement the Clean Cars Program. We will work with the governor’s office and others to ensure this program is successfully implemented.
Stopping Identity Theft
In the wake of failures in data security on the part of data dealers and credit card companies, Arizona PIRG’s national office crafted model legislation enacted by 34 states, and helped pass a law that provides one free credit report each year.
Combating Misleading Gift Card Practices
Gov. Napolitano signed an Arizona PIRG-backed law requiring that gift cards sold in Arizona clearly and conspicuously disclose their expiration date and information on relevant fees. The legislation requires the information to be prominently displayed for the consumer prior to purchase on all paper, electronic and computer gift cards.
Alerting Parents To Dangerous Toys
In November 2007, Arizona PIRG released the PIRG’s 22st annual toy safety report, “Trouble In Toyland.” Over the years, the report has resulted in at least 120 recalls and other enforcement actions, spurred passage of a federal toy labeling law and alerted the Federal Trade Commission to deceptively labeled toys.
