As international food safety and trade talks commenced in Malaysia this week, the United States pushed to permanently remove the issue of labeling genetically engineered foods from the agenda and to ignore the overwhelming support of American consumers and countries around the world for comprehensive labeling guidelines for foods containing genetically engineered ingredients.

Instead of protecting public health, the U.S. House of Representatives catered to powerful corporate interests today by passing H.R. 4167, the National Uniformity for Food Act. This bill undercuts critical state food safety and right-to-know requirements.

Legislation considered in the Senate Health, Employment, Labor and Pension Committee today would abolish more than 150 state and local food safety and notification requirements.

In refusing to consider the National Uniformity for Food Act (S. 3128) before the end of the 109th Congress, the Senate rejected an attempt to weaken America’s food safety system. The bill, supported by powerful food manufacturers, would have implemented sweeping changes to America’s food safety system by preempting hundreds of state and local food safety protections.
