What's New

This summer, as hundreds got sick and three people were killed from eating spinach contaminated by E. coli bacteria, the food manufacturing industry launched an attack on food safety laws. After passing a bill in the House to eliminate state and local food safety protections, the industry turned to the Senate to finish the job. Arizona PIRG worked to oppose the attempts to set food safety back at a time when it should be moving forward.  Ultimately, the Senate rejected this attack on food safety protections by refusing to even hold a vote on the dangerous industry bill. The threat to consumers, however, is not gone and Arizona PIRG remains vigilantly prepared to oppose similar industry attempts to weaken food safety protections.

Overview

Protecting the food supply is a serious job. State and local governments are often the first line of defense against threats to the food supply, as they are more nimble and able to respond to consumer concerns. To provide the safest food possible, the federal government must work with state and local governments and allow them to do what it takes to protect public health.

Arizona PIRG is working to maintain and strengthen food protections by calling on Congress to reject the industry’s attack on food safety laws by:

• Protecting existing food safety laws;
• Allowing states to establish stronger food protections; and
• Providing consumers the information they need about the food they are eating.
